Thin-Strip, Pull & Gripper Feeding

Thin-Strip Push-Pull Feeding for Soft Copper and Thin-Gauge Material

Control compression, tension and contact without damaging the strip.

Engineering answer: Thin or soft strip can buckle when pushed over an unsupported span and can stretch or mark when over-tensioned. Push, pull, coordinated and gripper layouts must be selected from stiffness, free span, surface, grip margin, loop behavior, die drag and the complete control strategy.
Strip supportKeep tension across the die area so thin strip cannot buckle before the pilots.
Material firstUse certified dimensions, strength, surface and coil data.
Cycle proofVerify the longest or most demanding move inside the actual machine window.
Measured acceptanceApprove the tested material, tooling, recipe and sample method.

Push-Pull Feeding on a Thin Strip Roller Feeder

A thin strip roller feeder indexes the strip by one fixed pitch on every press stroke, the same as any roller feeder. For extremely thin or soft strip, HENLIโ€™s RFS roller feeder can be supplied with a synchronized push-pull setup, which maintains tension across the die area and prevents buckling before the piloting position. Yellow polyurethane rollers can be added for a firm, non-marking grip on aluminum, copper, pre-painted, polished or thin-gauge material.

Push-pull feeding is also described as double-side, dual-action or bidirectional feeding. See single-side and double-side feeding for how the two layouts are set up, dual-action feeding for thin battery foil for a foil application, and reverse pulling feeders for layouts that pull the strip through the die.

  • Flatness, surface quality, strip tension and die registration also depend on the straightener, guides and die.
  • Confirm strip width, thickness and feed pitch against the current model table and drawings, and prove the setup in a trial with production strip.

Application Facts That Must Be Frozen

Complete the application sheet before choosing a machine or approving a claim. Missing inputs remain open engineering items.

  • Material, temper, thickness, width, surface and allowable marks.
  • Free spans, guide support, loop geometry and die drag.
  • Grip or roll contact zone and required traction.
  • Pitch, target cycle and opening/release timing.
  • Push, pull or master-slave control architecture and fail state.
  • Wrinkle, mark, slip, stretch and pitch acceptance criteria.

What the Feeding System Controlsโ€”and What It Does Not

Area Controlled or supported action Boundary
Push feed Index strip from upstream using controlled roll traction. Long unsupported spans can buckle thin material.
Pull feed Apply downstream motion where the process layout permits. Excess tension can stretch, neck or mark sensitive strip.
Gripper feed Move strip through a defined jaw/contact zone. The workpiece needs a stable grip margin and proven release sequence.
Coordinated axes Synchronize feed and pull through a defined buffer or control mode. Two uncontrolled axes can fight and damage the strip.

Key Engineering Decisions for Thin Strip

Three decisions shape a thin-strip feeding layout:

  • Compare upstream pushing, downstream pulling and coordinated layouts using buckling and tension risk.
  • Soft copper requires verified surface-contact pressure, guide design and clean material path.
  • Measure wrinkles, marks, slip and pitch with production strip at the target cycle.

Selection and Integration Workflow

1. Freeze the application

Decide whether the strip needs push, pull or push-pull feeding. Collect drawings, material and the real production sequence.

2. Select the architecture

Compare feeder, decoiler, straightener, guide, release and control options against measurable inputs. For fixed-pitch stamping, include a press-driven roll feed such as the RFS roller feeder, with or without the push-pull setup.

3. Prove the cycle

Run slow single-cycle checks, then increase speed while recording signals, material behavior and dimensional results.

4. Accept and control change

Approve only the tested configuration and document recipes, evidence, maintenance and change-control responsibilities.

Commissioning and Acceptance

Start with guards and interlocks active. Prove manual and single-cycle functions before automatic production, then increase speed in controlled steps.

  • Verify feed/release/ready/complete/fault I/O against the approved signal list.
  • Use production material and tooling; record the recipe, sample size and measurement method.
  • Check slip, marking, alignment, timing and the partโ€™s own quality characteristics at each speed step.
  • Record alarm and stop behavior, safe restart, preventive checks and responsibility at the machine interface.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

  • Model limits: check strip width, thickness and feed pitch against the current model table, configuration and quotation.
  • Performance: agree the material, pitch, cycle, sample size, measurement method and accepted result for the trial.
  • Safety or compliance: name the applicable requirement and who validates it; the feeder alone does not certify the finished product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pull feeding always better for thin strip?

No. It can reduce compression but introduces tension, guarding and synchronization requirements.

Can pressure simply be reduced to prevent marks?

Only to the level that still provides stable traction; contact material, cleanliness, acceleration and die drag also matter.

When should a gripper feeder be used?

When the strip provides a stable grip zone and the required pitch, speed, opening and surface criteria can be validated.

What should be sent to HENLI for this application?

Send the controlled drawing, material and coil data, pitch schedule, target cycle, press or shear details, die and release information, line layout, surface limits and the required FAT/SAT method.
