Controlled Trial Run
Commissioning is the staged proof that one identified feeder, press, die, material and interface work together. It begins after installation and adjustment are ready, and it ends before formal acceptance is signed.
- Stage 0Identity, documents, guards and stop authority.
- Stage 1Manual or jog observations at controlled motion.
- Stage 2Single-stroke press and release verification.
- Stage 3Measured speed ramp and acceptance handoff.
Confirm commissioning prerequisites
Do not use commissioning to finish an incomplete installation. Confirm that mounting, passline, power, air where applicable, guarding, emergency-stop functions, upstream support, die readiness and the feederโpress interface have been released for the planned trial by the responsible people.
| Gate | Evidence to have available | Hold the trial when |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Feeder, press, die, material, job and current revisions | Any identity or revision is unknown or conflicting. |
| Mechanical readiness | Mounting, passline, strip support, guides and guarding status | Material binds, equipment is loose or guarding is incomplete. |
| Controls readiness | Approved I/O list, signal meanings, safe states and stop authority | A signal must be bypassed or its meaning is uncertain. |
| Trial plan | Modes, measurements, hold points, criteria and responsible approver | The team cannot state what passes each stage. |
Load material and prove the path without side pull
Prepare the upstream coil or sheet support at a controlled condition. Set the feeder guides for the actual strip and confirm that the loop or support arrangement does not continuously pull, lift or steer the material. Use only the identified machine procedure for opening rollers, threading material and restoring the clamping state.
Load the released job values
Enter or select only the approved recipe for the named job. Verify feed length, units, feed count, direction, speed limit and any sequence data against the released source. If a value is missing or conflicts with another document, treat it as an engineering hold rather than filling the gap from memory.
- Adjustment handoff: passline, guides, roller grip and material-thickness setup are secured and recorded.
- Recipe check: a second authorized person or approved verification method confirms critical job values.
Verify feederโpress signal functions before automatic operation
Use the approved interface list to identify every function being observed: feed request or permissive, feeder ready, cycle complete, release or pilot request, fault, stop and any project-specific interlock. Confirm source, receiver, active state and safe response. A universal crank angle cannot be supplied because press motion, die clearance, release hardware and controls architecture vary.
Run an authorized jog check
At the permitted manual condition, move the material in small controlled increments. Observe direction, free travel, guide contact, loop response, roller grip and the leading edge entering the die. Stop when the strip binds, climbs, dives, marks, pulls sideways or moves differently from the authorized command.
Observe
Record what moved, when it moved and which command or state was present. Avoid assigning a root cause during the first observation.
Measure
Use an identified reference and suitable instrument. Retain units, resolution and the exact operating mode with each result.
Verify release and pilot behavior in single-stroke mode
Where the die uses pilots or another release requirement, observe the handoff only at the approved slow or single-stroke condition. The feeder must not constrain the strip during the project-defined correction interval, and it must regain control as defined for the next feed. Set or change timing only through the named press, die and feeder procedure.
Mechanical and pneumatic release systems use different hardware and adjustment methods. Do not transfer a screw position, clearance or angle from another feeder.
Measure repeated feeds before increasing speed
A single correct movement is not proof of repeatability. Follow the approved measurement plan: mark or reference the strip, collect the required consecutive observations, retain individual results and compare them with the job criteria. The planโnot this articleโsets sample count, instrument, tolerance and disposition rule.
| Evidence | What to record | What it can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| Individual feed results | Target, measured value, units and sequence number | Bias, drift or intermittent variation. |
| Strip condition | Marks, edge rub, deformation and pilot-hole condition | Excess grip, side load or release conflict. |
| Interface trace | Relevant command, ready, complete and fault states | Missing handshakes or unstable permissives. |
| Operating condition | Mode, speed stage, material and recent change | Whether the symptom begins only after a transition. |
Increase speed through documented hold points
Move from single-stroke to a low automatic condition and then through the authorized speed stages. At each hold point, repeat the required feed, strip, interface and part checks. A stable low-speed result does not automatically authorize full production speed.
Hand measured evidence to acceptance
Commissioning is complete when the planned stages are run, deviations are recorded and the configuration is ready for formal review. It is not complete because the machine produced one acceptable part. Preserve the final settings, measurement file, observed interface states, unresolved items and the people who approved the handoff.
Acceptance checklistReview accuracy, repeatability, interfaces and release evidence.
Installation guideReturn unresolved mounting, alignment or utility work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the correct feed-start angle?
There is no safe universal angle. Use the released press, die, feeder and interface documents for the named line, then verify the result in controlled motion.
How many samples are required?
The approved commissioning and acceptance plan must define the sample count, measurement method and pass criteria. Retain every required observation.
When can automatic production begin?
Only after the required speed stages and acceptance criteria are complete, deviations are closed or formally dispositioned, and the responsible approver releases the line.
Prepare a commissioning record HENLI can review
Include machine identity, job data, interface documents, staged results, measurements, photos tied to the test condition and every open deviation.
