Traction Without Damage
Clamping pressure must create enough traction to index the strip without slip while avoiding roller marks, edge distortion or side pull. The setting belongs to the actual feeder, roller material, strip and production condition.
Why clamping pressure is a balance
| Condition | Likely result | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Too loose: insufficient grip | Strip slips: short feed, uneven pitch or rollback | Consecutive measurements, roller/strip motion and surface condition. |
| Too tight: excessive grip | Witness marks, deformation, edge curl or additional drive load | Both strip surfaces, edges and roller contact pattern. |
| Unequal left/right condition | Material deviation or uneven wear | Strip tracking, pressure mechanism and roller condition by side. |
| Contamination or upstream drag | Apparent pressure problem that returns after adjustment | Oil, debris, loop pull, guide friction and die-entry resistance. |
Freeze the material and machine state
Record the feeder model, roller type and condition, material specification, width, measured thickness, surface sensitivity, lubrication state, feed pitch, passline, guide position and last accepted setup. Use the machine manual or project sheet for the actual spring, gap or pressure mechanism.
Remove other causes before increasing pressure
- Strip path: passline, guides and die entry do not continuously drag or steer the material.
- Upstream supply: the loop does not pull against the feeder and the straightener output is aligned.
- Contact surfaces: rollers and strip are free of unexpected debris or contamination.
- Mechanical state: release, brake and anti-reverse behavior are not creating the apparent slip.
Adjust in controlled increments
Use the identified mechanism and record the starting state. Make one small approved change, secure it, then run the authorized feed test. If left and right adjustments exist, preserve the required relationship and do not compensate for misalignment by deliberately creating unequal grip.
How to set clamping pressure for material thickness
Clamping pressure has to prevent slipping without damaging the strip. If it is too tight, the rollers can deform the material or leave press marks; if it is too loose, the strip slips and the feed length becomes inaccurate. On the HENLI high-speed roller feeder shown in the video below, the setting is made with the main locking screw and the pressure adjustment handle:
- Loosen the main locking screw.
- Turn the pressure adjustment handle to set the clamping pressure for the material thickness.
- Check the release lever gap, so the clamping and release systems still work together.
- Tighten the locking screw again.
- Finish with a simple manual test: the strip must not slip during the feed cycle.
Repeat this feeder pressure adjustment whenever the material thickness changes. If marks remain at the lowest pressure that still prevents slipping, change the roller surface rather than the pressure: the RFS roll feeder machine range offers optional non-marking polyurethane (PU) rollers for aluminum, copper, pre-painted, polished or thin-gauge strip.
Verify pitch and surface together
Measure the approved number of consecutive feeds at the defined operating condition. Inspect the top and bottom surfaces, both edges and lateral tracking. A setting fails if it meets pitch but damages the strip, or protects the surface but cannot maintain feed under load.
Low-speed verification
Confirm grip, release and strip condition in controlled motion before automatic speed is increased.
Production-condition verification
Repeat the approved measurements and surface inspection at each speed or duty hold point.

Frequently asked questions
Should thicker material always use more pressure?
Not automatically. Use the actual machine and material procedure, then verify traction and damage under the planned condition.
Can oily strip be corrected only by tightening the rollers?
No. Identify whether the oil condition is approved, clean only by the permitted process and check upstream drag, roller condition and material requirements.
What if one edge drifts after pressure adjustment?
Stop and check left/right mechanism state, guides, passline, roller wear, loop direction and material camber. Do not keep adding unequal pressure.
Need a pressure-setting review?
Provide feeder and roller identity, strip data, surface requirements, consecutive pitch results, photos of both surfaces and the operating condition where slip or marking begins.
