Coil Handling Engineering Tool

Steel Coil Weight Calculator: PIW & Decoiler Capacity Screening

Enter coil OD, ID, width and material density to estimate coil mass, PIW and a first-pass decoiler load class. Then send the complete coil envelope to HENLI for a custom machine recommendation.

Calculate coil weight

HENLI heavy-duty decoiler with a loaded steel coil and loading support equipment
Heavy-coil handling is checked as a system: coil, mandrel, support, loading method and line conditions.

What this tool does: If the actual coil weight is unknown, it converts the coil dimensions into an estimated mass. The result helps you eliminate undersized decoilers and identify a load range for discussion. It does not automatically approve a specific model; HENLI can customize the decoiler after checking the actual coil and line data.

Calculate coil weight, PIW and screening load

The calculation treats the material as a tightly wound annular coil. The material-density presets are planning values and can be replaced with certified data.

Used only to screen a rated-load class. It does not increase a machine’s approved capacity.

The geometry excludes bands, pallets, sleeves, spacers, packaging and trapped oil or water. Add these loads separately or use the actual shipped weight.

Use the actual tag weight when available. A mill tag or certified scale result is better than geometry for final purchasing and machine approval. The calculator is especially useful when customers know only OD, ID and width or are comparing future coil sizes.

What the calculator results mean

Estimated coil weight

This is the mass of a tightly wound annular coil calculated from OD, ID, width and density. It is the first value used to reject an undersized decoiler. It excludes packaging, pallets, bands, spacers, sleeves and trapped liquid.

PIW: pounds per inch of width

PIW equals total coil weight in pounds divided by coil width in inches. It describes how concentrated the load is across the coil width. Two coils can have the same total weight but very different PIW values.

PIW is not a standalone pass/fail rating. It does not replace checks for total weight, OD, width, overhang, center of gravity, mandrel geometry, support arms, braking torque or dynamic loading.

Screening load

The screening load is calculated mass multiplied by the user-entered planning allowance. This is an early comparison valueโ€”not an approved machine rating and not an engineered safety factor.

Approximate strip length

When thickness is entered, strip length is estimated from calculated material volume. It assumes uniform thickness, width and density and ignores gaps between wraps. Use it for planning, not inventory settlement or a production guarantee.

Coil weight formula and worked example

Coil volume (mยณ) = ฯ€ รท 4 ร— (ODยฒ โˆ’ IDยฒ) ร— width
Coil mass (kg) = coil volume ร— density (kg/mยณ)

OD, ID and width must be converted to metres before the formula is applied. The imperial interface converts inches to SI units internally and converts the result back for display.

Example input

MaterialCarbon steel
OD / ID1,200 / 508 mm
Width500 mm
Thickness1.00 mm
Density7,850 kg/mยณ

Calculated result

Volume0.4641 mยณ
Mass3,643.5 kg
Weight8,032.6 lb
PIW408.1 lb/in
Strip length928.3 m

Planning density defaults in the calculator are carbon steel 7,850, stainless steel 8,000, aluminum 2,700, copper 8,960 and brass 8,500 kg/mยณ. Grade, alloy, coating or cladding can change actual density, so certified material data should govern final validation.

From calculated weight to a HENLI decoiler route

HENLI builds standard and non-standard decoilers. The calculated weight therefore helps define the starting load class; it does not force the customer into one fixed catalogue model.

Screening load First route to review What still requires confirmation
Up to 5,000 kg Standard decoiler Exact width class and load rating, coil ID/OD, loading method and line conditions
Above 5,000 to 15,000 kg Heavy hydraulic decoiler Mandrel, support, retention, braking/drive, foundation and loading system
Above 15,000 to 20,000 kg Custom heavy hydraulic decoiler; coil-car review when required Complete coil envelope, loading sequence, center height, floor/rail layout and safety provisions
Above 20,000 kg Custom feasibility review Outside HENLI’s published screening range; send the complete application data

These bands do not mean that every standard decoiler can carry 5 tons or every heavy hydraulic decoiler can carry 15 tons. Working width and load rating are separate limits. Reinforced and custom capacities apply only to the exact configuration confirmed in the quotation.

When the tag weight is unavailable, coil geometry provides a defensible first estimate before custom selection.

Why coil weight alone cannot select a decoiler

Coil ID and mandrel

The coil eye must match the usable expansion range. Sleeves, blocks or a different mandrel may be required.

OD and inertia

A larger OD increases rotating inertia, braking demand, clearance needs and the loading envelope.

Width and overhang

Usable width and rated load are separate. Off-centre loading and excessive overhang change shaft and support demands.

Material and speed

Thickness, strength, line speed and start-stop frequency influence opening, acceleration and loop control.

Loading and retention

Heavy coils may need a coil car, support arm, hold-down arm or other retention features.

Drive and downstream line

Motorized, brake-controlled and pull-through payoff arrangements require different operating checks.

Large OD and high coil mass affect mandrel support, coil retention, loading and braking requirements.

A practical custom-selection workflow

  1. Read the actual coil weight from the mill tag whenever possible.
  2. Use the calculator when the actual weight is unknown or when future coil sizes are being compared.
  3. Record both total weight and PIW; do not substitute one for the other.
  4. Confirm coil ID, maximum OD and maximum strip width.
  5. Add packaging or handling loads if they remain on the support equipment.
  6. Define how the coil will be loaded, centred and retained.
  7. Share thickness, material strength, line speed and downstream machine.
  8. Ask HENLI to confirm the non-standard configuration and rated load.

Common calculation and selection mistakes

Forgetting to subtract the coil eye

Treating the coil as a solid cylinder overstates weight. The inner diameter must be subtracted through the annulus formula.

Mixing millimetres, metres and inches

Unit mistakes can change the answer by orders of magnitude. This calculator converts dimensions internally and shows the active unit beside every field.

Using a generic density for final purchasing

Planning densities help comparison, but grade, alloy and coating can change mass. Use certified material data for approval.

Selecting from weight alone

The same load creates different demands depending on OD, width, position, acceleration and line arrangement. Match the complete operating envelope.

Calling the planning allowance a safety factor

Only the equipment supplier can confirm rated load and required design margin for a specific configuration. A larger number in the calculator never increases the physical capacity of a machine.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate steel coil weight from OD, ID and width?

Calculate annular volume using ฯ€/4 ร— (ODยฒ โˆ’ IDยฒ) ร— width, then multiply by steel density. Convert all dimensions into compatible units first.

What density should I use for carbon steel?

7,850 kg/mยณ is a common planning value. Use the material supplier’s certified density for final purchasing and load validation.

What is PIW for a steel coil?

PIW means pounds per inch of coil width. Divide total coil weight in pounds by width in inches. It describes load concentration but does not replace total machine-capacity checks.

Does PIW determine the required decoiler?

No. Total weight, ID, OD, width, overhang, line speed, drive/brake arrangement, support and loading method must also be evaluated.

Can HENLI customize a decoiler from the calculated weight?

Yes. The calculated or actual maximum coil weight establishes a starting load class. HENLI then checks width, ID, OD, material, speed, loading method and downstream equipment before confirming the custom configuration.

Should I add a safety factor to calculated weight?

Do not invent an equipment safety factor. The optional allowance is for early screening only. Actual coil weight and HENLI’s confirmed machine rating govern selection.

When should a hydraulic coil car be considered?

Consider it when weight, loading frequency, crane/forklift access, centre height or operator exposure makes direct loading impractical. Saddle, travel, lift and coil envelope must all match.
