Recycled Metal Strip

Build Recipes From Measured Strip Properties—not a Fictional Density Sensor

This guide separates the real material or manufacturing requirement from standard servo-feeder functions, then identifies the data and validation needed for a reliable line.

Engineering answer: Recycled content is a material-sourcing attribute, not a separate feeder architecture. Standard metal-strip feeders do not normally measure density and change feed length from it. What the line experiences is the actual strip geometry, strength, flatness, surface friction, coating, coil condition, inertia and tension. These inputs should be controlled by material specifications, incoming inspection, recipes and trials.

What the Evidence Supports

This page separates the real material or manufacturing topic from capabilities that have not been demonstrated for a HENLI servo feeder.

  • Research evaluates how recycled content and production routes can affect sheet mechanical properties and formability.
  • A density sensor or density-compensation control architecture is not part of the demonstrated feeder scope described here.
  • Paper, plastic and bioplastic handling claims were outside the demonstrated HENLI metal-coil feeder scope.

Evidence Required for Special Claims

The application name alone does not prove a special machine capability. Treat each claim as project-specific and record the evidence used for quotation and acceptance.

  • Machine specification: identify the exact model, component ratings, environmental limits and approved material envelope.
  • Performance: state the test material, feed pitch, cycle rate, sample size, measurement method and acceptance tolerance.
  • Certification or compatibility: identify the applicable standard, scope, configuration and supporting report instead of relying on a general label.

What the Servo Feeder Controls—and What It Does Not

Engineering area Feeder or line action Boundary
Feed length The servo controls commanded roll rotation and strip travel. Material density is not a normal length-correction input.
Recipe parameters Acceleration, pressure and speed can be set by qualified material family. Recipes require measured properties and cannot replace incoming control.
Traction Roll finish, pressure and surface friction affect slip. Density does not directly describe the roll-strip friction condition.
Line stability Loop and payoff settings manage coil disturbance. Flatness, camber and variable thickness still require material and straightening controls.

Application Data to Verify Before Quotation

Use measured production data and material documentation. A feeder model should not be selected from the application name alone.

  • Specify alloy, recycled-content requirement and applicable material standard.
  • Inspect thickness, width, strength, elongation, coating, flatness and surface condition by lot.
  • Define the allowed lot-to-lot variation for the stamping process.
  • Create recipes from validated strip families rather than marketing labels.
  • Monitor slip, pilot correction, marks and die performance during trials.
  • Escalate out-of-spec material instead of compensating indefinitely at the feeder.

Recommended Engineering Workflow

1. Control incoming strip

Use certificates and measurements for the properties that affect forming.

2. Classify material families

Group lots only when the same feeder and die settings are validated.

3. Tune the real variables

Adjust acceleration, pressure, loop and straightening from evidence.

4. Track capability

Link material lot, recipe and part-quality data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does recycled metal have a different density?

Density is primarily associated with alloy composition; it is not normally the feeder’s control variable.

Can recycled content affect forming?

Material production route and chemistry can affect mechanical properties, so the certified strip and forming data matter.

Should the feeder automatically compensate for every lot?

Only within an approved process window. Out-of-spec material should be controlled at the material level.

Define the Application Before Selecting a Feeder

Send the material standard and condition, width and thickness range, feed pitch, target strokes per minute, press and die details, surface requirements, line layout and the acceptance method. HENLI can review the standard feeder scope and identify any special engineering that still requires validation.
