In automated stamping and blanking production lines, coil feeding is essential. Decoilers, as specialized equipment for handling coil stock, are widely employed. Among various types, Heavy Duty Decoilers are the mainstream uncoiling devices due to their high load capacity, broad applicability across material thicknesses and widths, and customizability.
Standard Heavy Duty Decoilers typically use a sensing arm mechanism. As the decoiler unwinds metal coil into a subsequent leveler, the material naturally sags under gravity, forming an arc between the decoiler and the leveler. Contact with the sensing arm stops the decoiler; releasing it restarts operation, enabling automated control.
However, this standard design has inherent limitations: it only works with metal materials, and the decoiling speed critically affects the loop height, leading to problems. High speeds increase the loop, causing slack (“loose coil”). Low speeds decrease the loop, pulling the material taut (“pull-through coil”). Pull-through stretches and deforms the material, risks damage, and can harm both the decoiler and the leveler.
To fundamentally overcome these shortcomings, we developed the Photoelectric Heavy Duty Decoiler. This innovation replaces the sensing arm with multiple sets of photoelectric sensors. These sensors precisely detect the loop height and dynamically control the decoiler shaft’s rotation speed via its inverter. This delivers truly accurate control, eliminating both pull-through and slack issues, thereby boosting stamping efficiency and reliability.
Currently integrated primarily into 3-in-1 feeder lines, the Photoelectric Heavy Duty Decoiler uses three vertically arranged sets of through-beam photoelectric sensors:
-
First Sensor Triggered: Signals decoiling is too slow (risk of pull-through). The controller increases decoiler speed.
-
Second Sensor Triggered: Signals decoiling is too fast (risk of slack). The inverter reduces decoiler speed.
-
Third Sensor Triggered: Signals the decoiler to stop completely.
This multi-stage photoelectric system achieves fully automated, precise control.
Application Focus: Precision Stamping of Beverage Can Ends
The Photoelectric Heavy Duty Decoiler is ideally suited for high-volume, precision stamping applications demanding absolute material feed consistency. A prime example is the production of beverage can ends (lids).
-
Why it fits: Stamping millions of identical can ends from thin-gauge tinplate or aluminum coil requires flawless, high-speed feed without slack or tension spikes. Any material disturbance causes defects or downtime.
-
Machine Advantage: The photoelectric control’s rapid response ensures the exact loop height is maintained during the demanding, continuous operation of a can end stamping press line. It handles the high-speed stamping (often 2,000+ pieces per minute) and the specific material properties of beverage can stock, preventing the pull-through or slack that standard decoilers suffer from. This results in consistent quality, reduced scrap, and maximized production uptime for can manufacturers.
