Introduction: The Role of Hydraulic Expansion

The hydraulic expansion system is a critical optional component for Coil Reels (Decoilers). It serves two primary functions:

  1. Automatic Expansion: It replaces manual hand-cranking, allowing the mandrel to expand and contract hydraulically.

  2. System Lubrication: It provides spray lubrication to the mandrel gears and bearings. This ensures cleaning, cooling, and lubrication, guaranteeing the smooth operation and longevity of the Coil Reel’s core components.

The Challenge: Common Leakage Issues

In practical applications, the hydraulic closed-loop system requires a precise balance of flow and clear piping to operate correctly.

  • Lubrication Shortage: If oil flow is insufficient, bearings and gears wear out rapidly, leading to equipment failure or safety hazards.

  • Blocked Return: If the oil return path is not smooth, pressure builds up, causing oil to leak from the seals. This results in environmental contamination, resource waste, and increased operational costs. These are common issues found in standard hydraulic Coil Reels on the market.

Our Technical Solution: The “Active Return” Design

To fundamentally resolve these limitations, we have implemented a structural improvement to the hydraulic system.

We drill a specialized drainage hole at the lower part of the hydraulic system’s end cap. This hole creates a direct return path connected to the gearbox via a return pipe. Any excess grease or oil that accumulates in the sealing area drains through this hole and flows back into the gearbox via the circulation pump.

This design addresses the root cause of leakage by ensuring that oil never accumulates at the seal to the point of failure.

Technical Advantages & Benefits

Compared to existing technologies, this improved hydraulic Coil Reel offers four key benefits:

  1. Leak-Free Operation: By processing a return hole under the bearing end cap, accumulated oil flows back to the gearbox naturally. This solves the issue of poor return flow and eliminates leakage at the skeleton oil seal source.

  2. Extended Bearing Life: The consistent and stable lubrication system prevents overheating and friction, significantly increasing the lifespan of the bearings and gears.

  3. Reduced Seal Wear: The design allows oil to escape before pressure builds up, drastically reducing the performance requirements and wear rate of the skeleton oil seals.

  4. Lower Maintenance Requirements: This improvement eliminates the need for operators to frequently adjust oil levels, clean up oil spills, or replace seals, thereby reducing labor intensity and maintaining a cleaner production environment.

FAQ Section

Q1: What are the main functions of the hydraulic expansion device on a Coil Reel?

A: It has two main functions: first, to automate the expansion and contraction of the reel (replacing manual cranking), and second, to spray lubricate the spindle gears and bearings for cooling and cleaning.

Q2: Why do standard hydraulic Coil Reels often leak oil?

A: Leakage usually occurs due to poor oil return flow. When oil accumulates at the seals and cannot flow back to the tank/gearbox quickly enough, the pressure forces the oil out through the skeleton seals, causing leaks.

Q3: How does the improved design fix the leakage problem?

A: We added a drainage hole at the bottom of the bearing end cap connected to a return pipe. This allows excess oil to flow directly back to the gearbox instead of building up pressure against the seals, effectively stopping leaks at the source.

Q4: Does this improvement help with maintenance?

A: Yes. Since the system prevents leakage and reduces wear on the seals, operators do not need to frequently clean up oil spills, refill the oil tank, or replace the skeleton seals, reducing overall labor intensity.

Q5: How does this affect the lifespan of the machine?

A: By ensuring the lubrication system runs stably without blockages or shortages, the bearings and gears are better protected against heat and friction, extending the overall service life of the Coil Reel.
