SURFACE-PROTECTION FEEDER COMPARISON
NC grip feeders and roller feeders contact strip in different ways. The correct choice depends on where contact is allowed, whether a mark is cosmetic or functional, the required pitch and speed, and how the strip will be accepted.
Executive Summary:
- A grip feeder avoids continuous rolling contact across the strip, but its clamps still create defined contact zones.
- A roller feeder can be suitable when roller material, pressure, cleanliness and strip support meet the surface requirement.
- Neither architecture is automatically non-marking. Confirm the accepted surface with real strip and production-condition testing.
Table of Contents
ToggleHow the strip is contacted
| Item | Roller feeder | NC grip feeder |
|---|---|---|
| Contact | Upper/lower rollers grip and rotate against the strip. | A reciprocating clamp grips a defined strip zone, feeds, releases and returns. |
| Marking risk | Pressure lines, contamination marks or slip scratches if setup is unsuitable. | Clamp impressions or edge/contact-zone marks if jaws and force are unsuitable. |
| Proof needed | Roller material, pressure, cleaning, guide and speed trial. | Allowed clamp zone, jaw condition, force, pitch and return-cycle trial. |
When a roller feeder remains a strong option
Keep the roller-feeder option open when the job uses a stable pitch, the press interface supports the mechanical architecture, production speed favors repeat synchronized feeding, and the strip surface can be accepted with the selected roller and guide system.
For plated, polished, copper or pre-painted strip, compare hard-chrome, PU or another project-specific roller solution. Softer rollers can reduce hard contact marks but may change traction, wear and speed behavior. HENLI offers a mechanical roller feeder with PU rollers for these surfaces as part of the RFS range.
When an NC grip feeder deserves review
Review a grip feeder when rolling contact across the visible or functional strip area is unacceptable and the part layout provides an acceptable clamping zone. Confirm clamp location, jaw material, force, feed pitch, return motion, press synchronization and target speed.
Define a measurable surface acceptance
- Material grade, thickness, width, coating or plating and lubrication condition.
- Visible/functional surface zones and any allowed clamp or roller contact area.
- Accepted reference sample, inspection lighting and measurement method.
- Feed pitch, press speed, die pilots, release timing and number of repeated cycles.

FAQ
Is a grip feeder always non-marking?
No. The clamp still contacts the strip. Jaw material, force, contact zone, cleanliness and acceptance testing remain necessary.
Can a roller feeder handle appearance-sensitive strip?
Sometimes. The answer depends on roller material, pressure, strip support, guides, cleanliness, speed and the measurable surface standard.
