NC Servo Feeder Installation

Mount the Feeder, Align the Strip Path and Prove Every Press Signal

A reliable installation is a controlled interface projectโ€”not only a matter of bolting a feeder to the side of a press. The mounting plate, pass line, die centerline, release mechanism, signal sequence, guarding and acceptance evidence must all match the named machine and job.

Short answer: install an NC servo feeder from released drawings and project data. Freeze the press mounting face, material direction, feed-line height, die centerline, release type, I/O list and safety boundary before drilling or wiring. Then commission the system from manual motion to low-speed automatic operation and record the acceptance result.
MountingUse the approved plate, fasteners, support and press-side hole pattern.
AlignmentMatch pass line, material centerline, die entrance and feeding direction.
SignalsVerify feed start, release, feed complete, reset and interlocks.
AcceptanceTest the real material, pitch, press window and safety sequence.

Pre-Installation Data and Supplied Parts

Do not begin with a generic hole pattern copied from another press. The installer should receive a released general-arrangement drawing and identify every interface that can affect alignment, operation or safety.

  • Press data: manufacturer, model, tonnage, bolster or side-face dimensions, feed window, speed range and available cam or PLC signals.
  • Die and strip data: feeding direction, pass-line height, material centerline, pilot pins, pitch, width, thickness and surface condition.
  • Feeder data: model, mass, mounting-plate drawing, height-adjustment range, roll opening and pneumatic or mechanical release arrangement.
  • Electrical package: voltage, grounding point, cabinet location, cables, I/O list, signal voltage and emergency-stop boundary.
  • Supplied hardware: feeder head, approved plate, fasteners, brackets, cabinet, release parts, sensors, cable protection and guards.
  • Work plan: lifting method, drilling authorization, lockout, responsible people, trial material, measuring tools and acceptance form.
Fastener sizes are project-specific. Earlier articles mention M14 or M16 bolts and a fixed number of holes. Those examples are not universal instructions. Use the released plate drawing, press structure and approved fastening calculation for the actual machine.

How to Install an NC Servo Feeder: Complete Workflow

Stage Work Evidence before release
1. Survey Confirm press face, available space, pass line, die centerline, feeding direction and service access. Signed measurements and released layout
2. Mount Install the approved plate, lift the feeder head and secure it without forcing alignment. Fastener and support inspection
3. Align Set height, centerline, level and square relationship to the die entrance. Recorded alignment measurements
4. Release Install pneumatic or mechanical pilot-release hardware for the selected feeder. Released mechanism drawing and free-motion check
5. Wire Connect power, ground, start, release, feed-complete, reset, alarm and safety interfaces. Point-to-point I/O verification
6. Commission Test manual motion, single feed, release and low-speed automatic sequence. Trial record with actual material
7. Accept Measure pitch, repeatability, surface condition and fault response. Approved report and closed deviations

Mounting Plate and Feeder Head Installation

Survey the press before drilling. Check whether the chosen face has enough structural thickness, whether internal ribs or components are behind the proposed holes, and whether the feeder can be lifted, adjusted and serviced in that position. Confirm that the material path will not conflict with guards, the die, scrap equipment or operator access.

  1. Mark the material centerline and reference elevation from the released drawing.
  2. Offer the mounting plate to the press and verify the complete hole pattern before machining.
  3. Drill and tap only after the press owner approves the location and internal clearance.
  4. Secure the plate, then check flatness, level and movement before lifting the feeder.
  5. Lift from approved points, place the feeder on the plate and install all specified supports and fasteners.
  6. Leave controlled adjustment available until height and die alignment are verified.

Set Feed-Line Height and Die Centerline

The feeder must present strip to the die without a vertical step, side pull or twist. Measure from a stable press reference to the real die pass line; do not assume that nominal die height equals the strip centerline. Check the minimum and maximum die set expected on the press against the feeder plateโ€™s usable adjustment range.

  • Vertical alignment: strip should enter the die at the approved pass-line height without being forced up or down.
  • Horizontal centerline: feeder rolls, guides and die entrance must share the intended material centerline.
  • Square relationship: the feed direction should be square to the die reference to prevent progressive lateral drift.
  • Loop and upstream line: the feeder must draw from a controlled loop rather than pulling against a straightener or decoiler.

For the dedicated measurement and plate-range procedure, use the separate guide to adjusting servo feeder and stamping-die feed-line height.

Install the Pilot-Release Mechanism

Pilot release temporarily removes roll clamping force so die pilots can correct strip position. The installation differs between pneumatic release and mechanical release, so the mechanism must be identified before the mounting and signal plan is finalized.

Release type Installation interfaces Checks
Pneumatic release Valve, cylinder, air preparation, tubing and press-trigger signal Pressure, leakage, release travel, return and timing at low speed
Mechanical release Press output motion, cam or lever, support rods, contact point and feeder release arm Free travel, no binding, full press rotation clearance and correct contact window

A mechanical-release feeder should not be confused with a mechanically driven roller feeder. The servo motor still controls feed length; โ€œmechanicalโ€ here describes how the rolls release for pilot correction.

Electrical Wiring, Grounding and Press Signals

Qualified personnel should connect feeder power and protective grounding to the approved electrical documentation. Route signal and power cables with suitable separation and protection from press vibration, sharp edges, oil, moving guards and die-change activity.

The control sequence normally needs named states for feed start, pilot release, feed complete, reset, alarm and safety permissives. Exact names, voltage and logic vary. Verify every point at the feeder terminal and at the press or PLC rather than assuming that identical wire colors mean identical functions.

For output-shaft support, sensor position and cam-angle setup, keep the dedicated servo feeder signal-cam installation guide. For document-led I/O, release, interlock and evidence checks, use the feederโ€“press interface verification and acceptance checklist.

Commissioning After Installation

Installation is not complete when the feeder powers on. Commission the interfaces in stages and change one condition at a time.

  1. Static inspection: verify fasteners, guards, cables, air connections, roll cleanliness and free material path.
  2. Manual functions: test roll open/close, forward/reverse jog, release and emergency stop without production cycling.
  3. Single feed: enter a conservative pitch, mark the strip and confirm direction, motion and stopping behavior.
  4. Press inching: observe the feed window, pilot release and die clearance through a controlled press cycle.
  5. Low-speed automatic: run consecutive strokes while watching I/O states, loop condition, slip and lateral drift.
  6. Progressive increase: raise speed only after the previous stage remains stable and recorded.
Safety: follow the plantโ€™s lockout, lifting, guarding and press-setup procedures. Do not bypass an interlock or reach into the feed or die area to observe timing. Project-specific risk assessment and local requirements control the final installation.

NC Servo Feeder Installation and Adjustment: Post-Mounting Checks

This section preserves the established nc servo feeder installation and adjustment intent. Adjustment begins only after mounting, alignment and signal verification are stable.

  • Guide width: center the strip with working clearance; do not clamp edges or use guides to correct a crooked feeder.
  • Roll pressure: apply enough force to prevent slip without marking or deforming the actual material.
  • Feed pitch: verify the programmed length with a repeatable measurement method over multiple cycles.
  • Feed speed: confirm acceleration and deceleration against the available press feed window.
  • Pilot release: verify release travel and timing without leaving the strip uncontrolled longer than required.
  • Start signal: confirm one valid press trigger produces one intended feed and that Feed Complete closes the sequence.

Record validated settings as a named recipe where the controller supports it. A repeat job still requires mechanical guide, roll-pressure, die and pass-line checks before production.

Installing an NC Servo Feeder on a SEYI or Existing Press

A SEYI press does not create one universal servo-feeder installation method. The press model, age, options, control generation, side-face geometry and available terminals determine the interface. The same rule applies to Chinfong and other existing presses.

Required evidence for a brand-specific installation: press model and serial range, released mounting drawing, feed-line reference, electrical diagram, named terminals or I/O, signal voltage, feed and release windows, safety boundary and approval responsibility. Without those items, use the generic workflow on this page and obtain confirmation from the press manufacturer or qualified integrator.

Send clear press-side photographs, measurements and the current electrical drawing before the feeder plate or signal interface is released. Do not drill the press or connect an undocumented terminal solely because another machine of the same brand was installed that way.

Common Installation Problems

Symptom First checks Do not assume
Strip walks sideways Feeder square, guide clearance, die centerline, upstream loop and roll pressure More guide pressure will correct a misaligned feeder
Feed length varies Slip, roll pressure, material condition, release timing, signal stability and cycle window The servo parameter is the only cause
Auto mode stops after one feed Counter, active program row, next press trigger, Feed Complete and interlocks Manual movement proves the automatic sequence is correct
Pilots cannot correct strip Release type, travel, timing, air pressure or mechanical linkage clearance A copied cam angle fits every press and die
Material marks Roll cleanliness, finish, pressure, strip surface and trapped debris Higher clamping force is always safer

Frequently Asked Installation Questions

Which side of the press should an NC servo feeder be installed on?

Install it on the side required by the material flow, die layout, press construction and released line drawing. Many examples use one side, but that is not a universal rule.

Can I reuse the mounting-hole pattern from another press?

Only if the released drawing explicitly approves it for the same press structure and feeder load. Survey the actual press for wall thickness, ribs, internal components and service clearance before drilling.

Is feed-line height the same as nominal die height?

Not necessarily. Measure the strip pass line at the die entrance and check the full die range against the feeder plate adjustment. Use the dedicated feed-line-height guide for the measurement workflow.

Does every NC servo feeder need a signal cam?

No. Some presses provide PLC or electronic cam outputs. A mechanical press without a suitable output may use an added cam and sensor, but the support, signal voltage and timing must be engineered for that press.

Can one installation procedure be used for every SEYI press?

No. Confirm the exact SEYI model, control version, mounting geometry, electrical diagram, terminals and safety interface. A generic brand label is not enough to define drilling or wiring.
