Strip-Shape Control

Separate Longitudinal Feeding From Straightening and Lateral Correction

This guide separates the real material or manufacturing requirement from standard servo-feeder functions, then identifies the data and validation needed for a reliable line.

Engineering answer: A conventional roll servo feeder controls longitudinal strip motion. It is not a three-dimensional shape-correction machine. Coil set and crossbow require a properly sized straightener or leveler; lateral camber requires material, guiding and line-layout analysis; already formed three-dimensional parts normally need a different handling system.
Longitudinal travelServo rolls move flat or suitably guided strip to the commanded pitch.
Coil set and crossbowA straightener or leveler can be selected for the material range.
Lateral positionGuides and optional edge-control systems can manage limited wandering.
Preformed partsA separate gripper, robot or transfer system may handle shaped parts.

What the Evidence Supports

This page separates the real material or manufacturing topic from capabilities that have not been demonstrated for a HENLI servo feeder.

  • The existing photographs show standard HENLI coil equipment, not a sensor-based 3D adaptive feeder.
  • No multi-axis curvature sensor, AI algorithm or 1200 RPM closed-loop system was evidenced.
  • HENLI has real straightening and guiding equipment that addresses defined strip-shape problems.

Coil equipment must assign straightening, guiding and feeding to the correct mechanisms.

A standard servo feeder indexes strip; it is not a three-dimensional part handler.

Evidence Required for Special Claims

The application name alone does not prove a special machine capability. Treat each claim as project-specific and record the evidence used for quotation and acceptance.

  • Machine specification: identify the exact model, component ratings, environmental limits and approved material envelope.
  • Performance: state the test material, feed pitch, cycle rate, sample size, measurement method and acceptance tolerance.
  • Certification or compatibility: identify the applicable standard, scope, configuration and supporting report instead of relying on a general label.

What the Servo Feeder Controls—and What It Does Not

Engineering area Feeder or line action Boundary
Longitudinal travel Servo rolls move flat or suitably guided strip to the commanded pitch. They do not flatten three-dimensional geometry.
Coil set and crossbow A straightener or leveler can be selected for the material range. The feeder’s pinch rolls are not a replacement for straightening rolls.
Lateral position Guides and optional edge-control systems can manage limited wandering. They cannot remove intrinsic strip camber.
Preformed parts A separate gripper, robot or transfer system may handle shaped parts. A standard coil feeder is not intended for loose 3D components.

Application Data to Verify Before Quotation

Use measured production data and material documentation. A feeder model should not be selected from the application name alone.

  • Classify the defect as coil set, crossbow, camber, wavy edge, twist or a preformed shape.
  • Measure the defect over a defined strip length using production material.
  • Check straightener roll diameter, number, penetration range and material strength.
  • Review guide spacing, loop geometry and die-entry alignment.
  • Determine whether the strip can physically pass through feed rolls without damage.
  • Trial the complete coil line and measure strip condition at the die.

Recommended Engineering Workflow

1. Name the shape error

Use measurements instead of the broad phrase 3D curvature.

2. Assign the function

Straightener, guides, edge control and feeder each have different roles.

3. Correct the line

Fix passline, loop and die-entry geometry before adding sensors.

4. Validate at speed

Measure strip position and flatness during the production cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can servo programming remove strip camber?

No. Programming changes longitudinal motion; camber is a material or line-guiding problem.

Can a straightener remove every shape defect?

No. Capability depends on material, thickness, strength, roll geometry and the type of defect.

When is another handling system required?

When the workpiece is already three-dimensional, cannot pass through rolls or needs orientation rather than strip indexing.

Define the Application Before Selecting a Feeder

Send the material standard and condition, width and thickness range, feed pitch, target strokes per minute, press and die details, surface requirements, line layout and the acceptance method. HENLI can review the standard feeder scope and identify any special engineering that still requires validation.
