Decoiler Operation Lifecycle
Pre-start, startup, automatic running, changeover, normal shutdown and abnormal stop require different checks. The supplied machine manual and accepted line configuration remain the operating authority.
Confirm Authorization and the Released Operating Basis
Match the machine identity and installed options to the current manual, electrical and hydraulic drawings, line layout and commissioning record. Confirm who may operate, load or thread a coil, enter guarded areas and diagnose electrical, hydraulic or stored-energy faults.
Complete the Pre-Start Line Check
- Coil and job
Confirm material, width, thickness, weight, ID, OD, winding direction and visible condition against the approved job and machine range. - Machine state
Verify mandrel, retainers, support arm, press arm, coil car, guards and fasteners in their accepted positions. - Material route
Inspect strip path, loop area, sensor, floor, cables, hoses and access zones from the designated safe position. - Line readiness
Confirm the downstream straightener, feeder, press, die or processing machine expects the same direction and material state.
Review unresolved maintenance tags, alarms, temporary restrictions and the previous-shift handoff. If loading or threading is incomplete, return to the coil-loading readiness and handoff framework.
Keep Jog, Setup, Manual and Automatic Modes Separate
| Mode | Purpose | Not authorized for |
|---|---|---|
| Jog / setup | Qualified positioning and function verification | Normal continuous production or bypassing a fault |
| Manual | Approved local motion under the model-specific procedure | Replacing automatic loop control |
| Automatic | Commissioned response to loop and downstream demand | Running with defeated safeguards or unknown sensor state |
| Maintenance | Work under the approved isolation and service method | Treating emergency stop as complete energy isolation |
Control labels vary by machine and option. Identical-looking switches or HMI buttons do not prove identical functions on another model.
Start the Line Through the Approved Sequence
Follow the released startup order for the complete line. Confirm intended rotation and material travel during the authorized low-demand check, prove normal stop response and observe the first stable loop before production demand increases.
First response
Confirm the decoiler receives the expected loop or downstream request and starts in the intended direction.
First stop
Confirm the stop request, drive response and coil coast do not create loose wraps, strip impact or an unsafe loop.
First loop
Observe the upper and lower behavior, sensor state, strip tracking and downstream pull.
Production release
Increase demand only through the accepted staged process with recorded observations.
Monitor the Coil and Loop During Automatic Running
From the designated safe position, monitor coil centering, mandrel retention, support devices, strip tracking, loop behavior, sensor switching, start-stop response, downstream pull, coast or overrun, and abnormal noise, vibration, heat, leakage or surface damage.
- Loose coil or telescoping
Pause before the coil or strip becomes an access or collision hazard. - Loop outside the envelope
Stop if material approaches people, structure, floor contact or guarding. - Start/stop mismatch
Capture the sensor and control state; do not change timers by trial and error. - Leak, noise, heat or vibration
Preserve evidence and route the condition to authorized service.
Use a Controlled Coil-Changeover Process
Changeover begins with the approved production stop and release of residual strip demand. Identify the remaining coil state, secure the material under the supplied procedure and establish the required access and energy-control condition for the loading method. Record the outgoing and incoming coil, job settings, exceptions and release person.
Double-head decoilers can prepare a second coil offline and reduce changeover interruption when the supplied line and work method support it. This does not remove controlled securing, threading, guarding, interlocks, verification or operator authorization.
Distinguish Normal Shutdown From an Abnormal Stop
| Condition | Required outcome | Restart basis |
|---|---|---|
| Normal shutdown | Coil, strip, loop, drive and downstream line left in the documented stable state | Routine pre-start and handoff review |
| Protective or emergency stop | Hazard controlled and event evidence retained | Cause resolved, safeguards restored and reset checks completed |
| Maintenance access | Applicable energy and material conditions isolated and verified | Permit closure, guard restoration and post-service test |
An emergency stop is a protective action, not a maintenance isolation and not automatic permission to enter the guarded area.
Route Faults by Symptom Instead of Guessing Settings
If the decoiler does not start, does not stop automatically, gives intermittent sensor signals, overruns, develops loose coil, fails to expand or release, or shows hydraulic, mechanical, surface, noise, vibration or heating symptoms, capture the state and use the uncoiler troubleshooting router.
Record the Operating Handoff
A useful handoff includes machine and coil identity, operating mode, job and line configuration, alarm history, observed loop behavior, approved changes, remaining material, maintenance holds and restart restrictions. The record helps distinguish an equipment symptom from a material, setup, interface or downstream-demand change.
- Pre-start record
Identity, guards, supports, sensor, downstream readiness and holds. - Run record
Loop, response, tracking, surface, noise, heat, vibration and leakage. - Changeover record
Outgoing/incoming coil, loading release, job data and restart checks. - Stop record
Alarm, event sequence, restriction, maintenance need and responsible owner.
Frequently Asked Operating Questions
Can manual mode be used when automatic loop control is not working?
Only for the specific authorized setup or diagnostic task in the supplied procedure. It must not become a workaround for continuous production.
When can production speed be increased?
After the approved lower-demand stage demonstrates stable loop behavior, tracking, start-stop response and no unresolved deviation.
Does an emergency stop make the machine safe to maintain?
No. Maintenance access requires the applicable electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, gravitational, coil and strip energy-control process.
