In the stamping manufacturing industry, raw materials like steel coils are standard for transport and handling. Processing these coils requires decoiling equipment before they enter the stamping line. Traditional heavy-duty decoilers use a single mandrel: a coil is loaded via crane or forklift, the mandrel expands to grip it, and rotation feeds material into the downstream stamping automation line or feeder. While robust and simple to operate, these decoilers force the entire stamping line to halt during coil changes. The time spent unloading the spent coil and loading a new one wastes valuable production time, disrupts continuous flow, and reduces overall line efficiency – a critical issue in high-volume manufacturing.
The Double Head Decoiler, developed by our company, directly addresses this limitation by eliminating lengthy changeover downtime. This innovative decoiler features two expansion mandrels mounted 180 degrees apart on a central rotating shaft, forming a cruciform configuration. A drive motor rotates this shaft. Its core advantage is the ability for one mandrel to actively decoil material into the production line while the other mandrel is simultaneously being loaded with a new coil using an overhead crane or forklift.
Application in Truck Frame Rail Production:
Truck frame rails are critical, high-strength structural components. Stamping these long, heavy sections from thick steel coil (often 3mm-12mm thick) demands uninterrupted material supply to maintain dimensional consistency and line throughput. Stopping the massive press line for decoiler changeovers is highly detrimental to productivity and cost-efficiency.
Operational Workflow for Frame Rail Stamping:
-
Initial Setup: A steel coil is loaded onto Mandrel A of the Double Head Decoiler before starting the truck frame rail stamping line.
-
Continuous Production: As Mandrel A feeds coil material into the stamping line (comprising levelers, servo feeders, and the large-tonnage press), operators use the crane to load the next coil onto Mandrel B.
-
Seamless Transition: When the coil on Mandrel A is depleted, the rotating shaft swiftly turns 180 degrees. This positions the pre-loaded coil on Mandrel B into the active feeding position, supplying material to the press line without stopping production.
-
Ongoing Cycle: While Mandrel B feeds material, Mandrel A is reloaded with a new coil. This alternating process repeats indefinitely.
Result for Truck Manufacturers:
By integrating the Double Head Decoiler into truck frame rail stamping lines, manufacturers achieve truly continuous material flow. The significant downtime inherent in traditional single-mandrel decoilers is eliminated. This maximizes press utilization, boosts overall line output, reduces per-part costs, and ensures consistent quality for these vital chassis components – all without compromising the heavy-duty requirements of processing thick, high-strength steel coils.
