Clad-Strip Feeding

Treat the Clad Stack as the Workpiece—not as a Special Feeder Construction

This guide separates the real material or manufacturing requirement from standard servo-feeder functions, then identifies the data and validation needed for a reliable line.

Engineering answer: Clad and laminated metal strip are real materials, but a five-layer clad strip does not require a feeder made from five-layer metal. Selection starts with the complete strip stack: total thickness and width, layer materials, bond method, surface condition, strength, flatness, allowable marks and the downstream forming process.

What the Evidence Supports

This page separates the real material or manufacturing topic from capabilities that have not been demonstrated for a HENLI servo feeder.

  • Published research documents aluminum-steel and copper-aluminum clad strip and the importance of the bonded interface.
  • The existing HENLI page showed standard feeders rather than a five-layer feeder construction.
  • No evidence supports universal ±0.02 mm accuracy, 30% energy reduction or zero-deflection battery foil claims.

A standard NC servo feeder can be configured for clad strip after the actual material stack is verified.

Roll contact, guide geometry and line tension must be evaluated with production material.

Evidence Required for Special Claims

The application name alone does not prove a special machine capability. Treat each claim as project-specific and record the evidence used for quotation and acceptance.

  • Machine specification: identify the exact model, component ratings, environmental limits and approved material envelope.
  • Performance: state the test material, feed pitch, cycle rate, sample size, measurement method and acceptance tolerance.
  • Certification or compatibility: identify the applicable standard, scope, configuration and supporting report instead of relying on a general label.

What the Servo Feeder Controls—and What It Does Not

Engineering area Feeder or line action Boundary
Feed index Servo motion controls commanded longitudinal travel. Part accuracy still depends on slip, pilots, die and material behavior.
Roll pressure Pressure can be set to transmit traction without excessive marking. It cannot repair a weak or damaged clad interface.
Line tension Loop geometry and payoff control can reduce pulling disturbance. The feeder should not be used as the only tension-control device.
Surface path Clean rolls, suitable coatings and guides can reduce scratches. No design guarantees a mark-free result without a sample trial.

Application Data to Verify Before Quotation

Use measured production data and material documentation. A feeder model should not be selected from the application name alone.

  • Identify every layer, bond process and total finished thickness.
  • Provide yield and tensile properties for the finished clad strip, not only each constituent metal.
  • Define permissible surface marks, coating sensitivity and cleaning restrictions.
  • Inspect camber, coil set, edge condition and any tendency toward interlayer movement.
  • Confirm whether die pilots can correct final registration.
  • Trial the real strip at production pitch and speed while inspecting marks and bond integrity.

Recommended Engineering Workflow

1. Characterize the stack

Freeze total gauge, width, layer sequence, bond and surface specification.

2. Design the contact path

Choose roll finish, guides and loop support around the most sensitive face.

3. Set traction conservatively

Increase pressure only enough to prevent slip during the required acceleration.

4. Prove the formed part

Inspect feed repeatability, surface, edge and interface after the complete die cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a five-layer clad feeder a special machine type?

No. Five-layer describes the material stack. The feeder is selected and configured for that strip’s measurable properties.

Should rubber-coated rolls always be used?

Not automatically. Coating material, hardness, contamination rules, traction and wear must be matched to the strip and tested.

Can feed rolls cause delamination?

Excess pressure, poor support or severe bending can damage sensitive material, but bond integrity is also a material and forming-process responsibility.

Define the Application Before Selecting a Feeder

Send the material standard and condition, width and thickness range, feed pitch, target strokes per minute, press and die details, surface requirements, line layout and the acceptance method. HENLI can review the standard feeder scope and identify any special engineering that still requires validation.
